From Acceptance to Decision: How Students Can Choose the Right College

Sun safety education programs for underserved students

Sun Safety Shouldn’t Be a Luxury: Protecting Underserved Youth from UV Risks

July is UV Safety Month, and while sunscreen may seem like a summer staple for some, for many underserved families, access to basic sun protection is far from guaranteed. The risks of UV overexposure—skin cancer, eye damage, heat exhaustion—don’t discriminate, but the protection does.

Children of color are often left out of the sun protection conversation. Though melanin provides some protection, it is a myth that Black and Brown skin cannot burn or develop skin cancer. According to the CDC, while melanoma is less common in people of color, it’s often detected at later stages, resulting in lower survival rates.

In underserved communities, children may spend more time outdoors without access to shaded recreation, protective gear, or proper education around UV exposure. Add to that limited access to affordable sunscreen, and the risk multiplies.

What We Can Do?

Programs that distribute sunscreen at summer camps, teach youth about sun safety, and provide hats and glasses are small investments with big impacts. DAAP partners with local initiatives to ensure that health and safety aren’t seasonal luxuries.
