Disability Pride Month: Inclusive Education Is Everyone’s Responsibility
July is Disability Pride Month—a time to reflect on the resilience, talent, and achievements of people with disabilities. But it’s also a time to examine what still needs to be done—especially in education.
Many students with disabilities in underserved areas face dual barriers: underfunded schools and lack of inclusive support services. According to the U.S. Department of Education, students with disabilities in low-income districts are less likely to receive necessary accommodations, participate in the arts, or have access to tech-enabled learning.
At DAAP, we believe that disability inclusion must be baked into the core of every program we fund. That includes:
- Supporting after-school programs that are ADA-compliant
- Encouraging scholarships for students pursuing adaptive arts or advocacy
- Partnering with orgs that teach inclusive curriculum design
