From Acceptance to Decision: How Students Can Choose the Right College

Support for students in education

Beyond Pencils: What Underserved Students Really Need to Succeed This School Year

August kicks off the school year for students across the country. For many families, that means school supply lists, fresh haircuts, and new beginnings. But for millions of students in underserved communities, “back to school” often comes with anxiety, lack of preparation, and gaps that begin long before the first bell rings.

At the Delta Academic Artistic and Philanthropic Foundation (DAAP), we believe back-to-school readiness should be about more than just notebooks and glue sticks—it’s about access, equity, and support systems that help students thrive.

What Underserved Students Actually Need

Access to Consistent Supplies

Many students begin the year without essentials like notebooks, calculators, backpacks, or even clothing that fits. This lack of preparedness can immediately create shame, distraction, and a sense of exclusion.

Digital Equity

Even in 2025, digital divides persist. A 2023 Pew study found that 35% of low-income households still do not have reliable high-speed internet. Students fall behind when they can’t complete online homework, join virtual tutoring, or access learning portals.

✅ Mental and Emotional Safety

Underserved youth are more likely to experience food insecurity, neighborhood violence, or unstable housing—all of which impact their ability to focus in the classroom. Support services like school counselors, trauma-informed teachers, and safe spaces can radically change a child’s educational outlook.

Programs that Reflect Their Identity

Culturally relevant curriculum and extracurricular programs allow students to feel seen, supported, and understood. Representation builds confidence and helps reduce behavioral and attendance issues over time.

How DAAP Steps In

DAAP partners with schools and local organizations to support:

  • School supply drives with dignity-centered distribution
  • Digital literacy and tech access programs
  • Scholarships for enrichment and artistic programs
  • Safe-space youth mentorships that build belonging
